The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works has launched the 2025 Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme. Now in its fifth cycle, this initiative aims to equip youth with technical skills and honor the legacy of Phakamile Mabija, a notable anti-apartheid activist.
Programme Objectives
- Empower young people through technical skills development
- Address the significant skills gap in infrastructure and service delivery
- Promote economic inclusion and sustainable employment opportunities for youth
Key Trades and Training Areas
Apprentices will receive practical training in the following high-demand fields:
- Welding
- Boilermaking
- Fitting and turning
- Mechanical industrial maintenance
- Refrigeration
These trades are in demand across both public and private sectors.
Implementation and Tender Process
- The DRPW has advertised Tender DRPW 002/2025
- Two accredited training providers will be appointed to implement the programme in Kimberley
- Responsibilities of providers include:
- Ensuring quality training
- Facilitating workplace exposure
- Supporting apprentices toward certification
Alignment with Provincial Strategy
- The programme supports the provincial government’s broader efforts to reduce unemployment and poverty
- According to Premier Zamani Saul’s 2025 State of the Province Address:
- Over 800 youth are expected to participate in artisan programmes this year
- The Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship is considered a key component of this vision
Duration: 36 Months (3 years)
Qualification: Nationally recognised Red Seal trade qualification
Stipend: Earn while you learn
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must be between 18–35 years of age and meet the following academic requirements:
- Boilermaking: N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Boilermaking Trade Theory.
- Fitting and Turning: N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Fitting and Turning Trade Theory.
- Welding: NQF Level 4 with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Platers Trade Theory.
- Refrigeration: N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Electrical Trade Theory.
