Education Department Launches Recruitment Drive for School Clerks

Whew, finally, someone’s doing something about the admin chaos in Eastern Cape schools. The Department of Education’s rolling out a massive hunt for school clerks—and honestly, it’s about time. For years, teachers out there have been drowning in paperwork, trying to juggle lesson plans, attendance, procurement, you name it—while still, you know, actually teaching. Impossible.

So now, the department’s basically saying, “Let’s get actual admin people to do the admin stuff.” Sipho Jali, the guy speaking for the department, even said it straight: teachers shouldn’t have to be superheroes just to keep things running. Imagine that. More time for teaching, less time wrestling with Excel. Wild concept.

What’s the actual gig? Entry-level admin, mostly. You’ll be that go-to person at the school who sorts out admissions, keeps tabs on attendance, files stuff (yes, actual paperwork, not just clicking around), helps with cash records, and deals with parents ringing you up about lost jerseys. You’ll answer to the principal—so, you know, don’t ghost them.

Who can apply? If you’ve got a Matric, can find your way around a computer, and don’t faint at the sight of a spreadsheet, you’re in the running. Bonus points if you’ve done office work before, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The department’s actually pushing for young people, especially folks in the neighbourhood (gotta keep it local), to throw their hats in the ring. They’re all about tackling youth unemployment, so this ticks that box too.

You’ve got till the end of July 2025 to apply, and don’t mess around—get your docs in order, certified ID, proof you finished school, all that jazz. Do it on the official department website, not some sketchy Facebook page.

And hey, the plan’s not just about filling seats. Gade, the MEC, made it clear: every clerk hired means a teacher gets to, you know, teach. That’s massive for schools, especially the rural ones where staff are already stretched thinner than a WhatsApp data bundle.

New clerks won’t just be dumped in the deep end either; they’ll get some training and digital tools to keep things consistent across the board. Finally, a move that might actually stick and not just look good on a press release.

Long story short? This whole drive might actually shake things up and make school admin suck a lot less—for everyone. About time.

APPLICATIONS:

Alright, here’s the deal: Drop your application off at the district office. Don’t forget to smack that reference number on it, the one linked to the school below (don’t ask me where, it’s somewhere in the details). You have to use the latest Z83 form—grab it from any Public Service office or just download it off that old-school gov site (http://www.info.gov.za/documents/forms/employ.pdf). Oh, and sign it! No signature? Straight to the reject pile.

Stack your application with an up-to-date CV (yes, they actually check), toss in at least two referees who will actually answer their phone, and certified copies of your qualifications, ID, and driver’s license if it’s needed. If you’re not a South African citizen or you’re rocking a permanent resident permit, you gotta attach that proof as well. Got foreign qualifications? SAQA evaluation certificate is a must—no exceptions, they’re sticklers for that.

Miss any documents? Sorry, your application’s going nowhere. They’re only chatting with people who make the shortlist, so if you don’t hear anything three months after the closing date, well, tough luck, try again next time. If they do like you, get ready for the full investigation: criminal record check, double-checking your citizenship, peeking into your finances and assets, digging through your qualifications, and grilling your previous employers.

Nailed the shortlist? You’ll be thrown into a technical test, just to see if you actually know your stuff, plus pre-employment screening—so don’t fake it. If this is your first rodeo in Public Service, you’re on probation for a year. Everyone they hire signs up for shift work, according to whatever system the department’s using.

Oh—and before you ask—applications from every racial group are welcome. But heads up, the department has got an Employment Equity Plan, so they might lean towards certain groups to hit their targets. Just being real with you.
