The City of Johannesburg has introduced its 2025 Metropolitan Police Learnership Programme, presenting a significant opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing careers within public safety and law enforcement. This initiative is particularly targeted at young, unemployed residents between the ages of 18 and 35, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and community impact.
Programme Overview
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Learnership is a comprehensive 18-month training and development programme. Participants engage in both theoretical coursework and practical, on-the-job experience. Academic components cover essential topics such as law enforcement principles, criminal justice, traffic regulation, by-law enforcement, and community policing. Physical fitness and endurance training, aligned with JMPD and SAPS standards, form a crucial part of the curriculum, ensuring candidates are adequately prepared for the demands of the role.
During the programme, learners are placed within various JMPD precincts across Johannesburg. This placement provides practical exposure to traffic management, crowd control, and local safety operations. The curriculum, developed in collaboration with accredited providers, aligns with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) requirements, thereby enhancing graduates’ employability.

– Aged between 18 and 35 years;

Preference is given to applicants with leadership potential, a history of community involvement, and a clear criminal record.
