What is the EPWP?
The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is a government initiative in South Africa designed to tackle unemployment by creating temporary job opportunities. This program focuses on helping unemployed individuals, particularly youth, women, and people with disabilities, by offering work in various sectors, including infrastructure, social services, environmental projects, and cultural initiatives.

From 2025 to 2027, the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) is set to take on a crucial role in rolling out and enhancing this initiative.

DARDLEA’s EPWP projects aim to create temporary jobs while also helping participants develop valuable skills. For example, during the 2023/24 financial year, the Sedibeng District Municipality teamed up with DARDLEA and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to generate 806 job opportunities through various environmental projects. These efforts not only provided much-needed employment but also included training in fields like business administration and project management, boosting the participants’ chances of finding permanent work in the future.
